“I am a fighter, some say a natural family law litigator. My purpose is to devise a strategy to defend my family law client’s rights with everything the law allows.”

Victor A. Rivera

He learned about divorce and family law the hard way, before ever becoming a family law attorney. Experiencing his own divorce, Victor Rivera went into it unprepared and didn’t hire the most effective divorce attorney possible.

A simple divorce without child custody or substantial property division issues turned into a three-year fiasco he was forced to complete himself. It may be the reason he decided to attend law school and is a diligent and resourceful Denton family law attorney today.

“My own divorce convinced me that any family law client of mine should not suffer the problems I faced,” says Mr. Rivera. “Family law litigation is one of the hardest areas of law because of the emotional impact it has on the family dynamic.”

From his start in divorce and family law in 2007, he found himself matched against family law lawyers with decades of experience. These older attorneys tried to intimidate him, warning him not to go to court or he would have his head handed to him.

“What a great feeling,” Mr. Rivera explains, “to see my client walk out of the courthouse on cloud nine because we got most of what we requested in the property division, child custody, visitation, and child support, when the client thought we were destined to lose.” He regularly handles large property settlements, including the division of retirement assets, complex divorce and family law litigation, prenuptial agreements, paternity issues, post-divorce modifications and even family law appeals.

A KoonsFuller Associate in the Denton office, Mr. Rivera calmly navigates the waters of divorce and family law because of his unusually rich life experience. He served in the U.S. Army as a cryptologic linguist (honorable discharge, 1995). He was a member of the Fort Worth Police Department (1999-2004).

While serving as a police officer, he earned a Bachelor of Applied Sciences with a dual major in political science and criminal justice from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls (2003). At Texas Tech, he simultaneously earned his M.B.A. from the Rawls College of Business and a J.D. from Texas Tech School of Law (2007).

He was a law clerk for a firm in Lubbock and taught business law at West Texas A&M University in Canyon. He moved back home to North Texas in 2008 and began his practice as a family law attorney. He also currently serves as an associate judge for the Town of Flower Mound Municipal Court.

He was honored by being named to the list of Texas Rising Stars in Family Law (Thomson Reuters 2010). Mr. Rivera is currently president of the Denton County Bar Association’s Family Law Section and often volunteers as a pro bono attorney in Denton County.

He is fluent in Spanish.
