Introduction

The practice of family law in Texas can be one of the greatest challenges for a lawyer. Family law encompasses many different areas and requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of such areas. This book includes topics such as marriage, common-law marriage, putative marriages, dissolution of marriage, community and separate property, property division, valuation of assets, custody, child support, paternity, the Hague Convention, maintenance, utilizing expert witnesses, torts, protective orders and enforcement, and appeal of a family law case. Each topic is discussed in a clear, concise and comprehensive manner.

This Practice Guide is written as a reference for attorneys who practice family law, and is designed to help attorneys find fast, reliable answers and practical guidance. Some of the features that enhance the practicality of the book include:

  • Outline format, with dashes indicating the levels of the hierarchical organization.
  • Case names, statutes and rules in italic to contrast them with the text.
  • Bold section headings for easy reference.
  • Forms and checklists to be used as a guideline for procedures and in drafting documents.

In order to ensure the accuracy of the Texas Practice Guide: Family Law, it will be updated annually. These updates will provide the family law practitioner with the latest changes in the law, as well as additional forms, checklists and helpful tips.
